Toolboxes
Toolboxes are a type of Item the Survivors
can use in Dead by Daylight
.
Overview
Toolboxes have two main uses: repairing Generators faster and sabotaging Hooks
.
Not all Toolboxes are suited for both aforementioned uses, as some are specialised for just one of them and perform poorly when executing the other.
Original Toolbox
The original and only Toolbox prior to Patch 1.1.2:
Toolbox | Metal box containing a set of basic tools. Even without training, can be used to repair or break various mechanical components.
"It is unclear as to where these tools come from. Were they brought in by one of us or did they belong to one of the monsters?" |
---|
New Toolboxes
Patch 1.1.2 introduced 5 new Toolboxes:
Worn-Out Tools | A metal box containing out of condition tools that could break at any moment. Even without training, can be used to repair or break various mechanical components.
"You call these tools? ... Really?" | |
---|---|---|
Commodious Toolbox | A large metal box containing basic tool and extra mechanical parts. Even without training, can be used to repair or break various mechanical components.
| |
Mechanic's Toolbox | A metal box with specialised mechanics tools. Even without training, can be used to repair or break various mechanical components.
| |
Alex's Toolbox | A metal box containing mainly saws and vice grips of varying sizes but also other tools. Even though the content of this Toolbox is clearly aimed at destructive deeds, it can be used to repair various mechanical components as well.
"Most of the tools are identified as 'owned by Alex'." | |
Engineer's Toolbox | A metal box with highly specialised tools meant for engineering. Most of the tools can be used by neophytes to make quick repairs or break various mechanical components.
"I've created tools beyond compare and stood paralysed as they were stolen from me. These are but a poor replica, spat out by The Fog." — Vigo's Journal |
Lunar Toolbox
Patch 4.5.0 introduced the Festive Toolbox, a special Toolbox to celebrate the Lunar New Year.
It uniquely detonates firecrackers on Great Skill Checks and fireworks on Failed Skill Checks.
It features a unique in-game model.
Features the same basic stats as the Commodious Toolbox.
Festive Toolbox | A Toolbox packed to the brim with fireworks, it is prepared to celebrate all your life's successes... and failures.
The Festive Toolbox is only available during Spring Events. |
---|
Anniversary Toolboxes
Patch 5.0.0 introduced the Anniversary Toolbox, a special Toolbox to celebrate the Fifth Year Anniversary.
Patch 6.0.0 introduced a new version for the Sixth Year Anniversary.
Both are identical in their effects, but feature unique in-game models.
Both feature the same basic stats as the Commodious Toolbox.
Anniversary Toolbox | A Toolbox that is slightly explosive.
The Anniversary Toolbox was only available during the Fourth and Fifth Year Anniversary Events. "Nothing says happy anniversary like detonating a firework and praying the Killer does not notice. | |
---|---|---|
Masquerade Toolbox | A Toolbox with all of the standard gadgets: wrenches, screwdrivers, fireworks, a hammer...
The Masquerade Toolbox is only available during Anniversary Events. "Happy Anniversary! We're fixin' to have a big party!" — The Dead by Daylight Team |
Add-ons
The following list features all available Add-ons for the Toolbox:
Icon | Name | Description |
---|---|---|
Clean Rag | A mundane rag. Suspiciously clean.
| |
Instructions | Someone quickly painted what seems to be repair instructions on this piece of bark.
While repairing a Generator
| |
Scraps | Springs, screws and gears. Mostly unusable junk.
| |
Cutting Wire | A rudimentary cutting tool made from a jagged metal wire and two wooden handles.
| |
Protective Gloves | Thick gloves, which reduce manual dexterity but protect hands from injury.
While sabotaging a Hook
| |
Socket Swivels | Swivels provide bend and flexibility for bolts that are out of reach, deep within mechanical devices.
| |
Spring Clamp | Useful tool to clamp hoses or hold wires in place and prevent damage or injury.
While repairing a Generator
| |
Wire Spool | A portable but heavy spool of copper wire.
| |
Grip Wrench | An adjustable wrench with a tough grip. Essential in any Toolbox.
| |
Hacksaw | A small hand saw mounted with a metal cutting blade.
| |
Brand New Part | This intricate mechanical part feels oddly out of place. It is clean and shiny as if straight out of the factory. Press the Use Item button while standing next to a Generator

Calculations
Capacity
Generator Repair
Each Toolbox has a set amount of Charges, referred to in its description on the Wiki as its capacity.
While using a Toolbox to repair a Generator, the Toolbox transfers its Charges into the Generator at the same rate as it increases the Repair speed for, a unique behaviour amongst Items.
This means that there is no standard Depletion rate common to all Toolboxes; each Toolbox has its own Depletion rate based on its Repair Speed bonus.
This behaviour is why in order to calculate interactions with Perks such as Streetwise or Overwhelming Presence
, which affect the Item Depletion rate, each individual Depletion rate of the Toolboxes must be accounted for in the calculations, as they are different from the default of -1 c/s other Items generally use.
This also has the effect that all Toolboxes with 16 Charges will progress a Generator by the same amount, but will do so within different timeframes, with rarer Toolboxes taking less time to transfer their Charges into a Generator.
This behaviour is the reason why Toolboxes with lower Charges are better used as a speed boost to Repair Completion towards the end of a Generator's Repair, as those 1-2 seconds can make the difference between either completing a Generator or being interrupted by the Killer first.
Hook Sabotage
Using a Toolbox to sabotage a Hook has a unique effect on the Depletion rate amongst any Items.
Usually, Items deplete their Charges at a default rate of -1 c/s while they are being used, which also applies to Toolboxes used for repairing a Generator.
Hook Sabotage, however, doubles the Depletion rate to -2 c/s, which paired with the Sabotage action taking 3 seconds to complete by default, makes the Toolbox deplete a total of -6 Charges per sabotaged Hook.
For quite a while, this was the reason why the gauge next to the Toolbox icon on the Survivor's HUD would turn red while using the Toolbox to perform the Sabotage action on a Hook (i.e. indicating the presence of a debuff). Most likely because the higher Depletion rate is an inherent behaviour of the Sabotage action, a later Patch eventually made the gauge remain coloured in default white.
Repair Speeds
- Repairing a Generator fills it with Charges.
A Generator requires 90 Charges in order to be fully repaired or completed.

Note: the calculations above assume a Survivor solo-repairing a Generator and not hitting any Great Skill Checks or using any other Unlockables to gain bonus Progression.
It also assumes that there are no negative modifiers from any Unlockable the Killer might be using.
