Sally Smithson or "The Nurse" is one of 39 Killers currently featured in Dead by Daylight.

She was introduced as the Killer of CHAPTER 1: The Last Breath Chapter, a Chapter DLC released on 18 August 2016.

Overview

Using her Blink ability, The Nurse can teleport great distances in moments, predicting and cutting off Survivor routes. A powerful process best honed by experience, careless Blinks are punished with a wave of fatigue. The epitome of high risk, high reward, The Nurse can end chases with surgical precision.

The Nurse is a warping Killer, able to blink through obstacles and quickly close gaps with her Power.

Her personal Perks, Stridor, Thanatophobia, and A Nurse's Calling, allow her to decrease Survivor abilities and track them when they are injured.

She is focused on spotting and tracking, making it harder for Survivors to hide.

Difficulty Rating: Very Hard

Lore

Sally Smithson came to town with dreams of children's feet and laughter in a wooden home built by her husband Andrew. But life came not with smiles but with plans of destruction. Andrew worked as a lumberjack - a job with its perils. One day, Andrew's foreman had to pay Sally a visit, forever changing her life. She was alone.

Without food on the table and no other option, Sally had to find a way, but the only employment she could get was at the Crotus Prenn Asylum. Nobody sought employment there unless they were in dire need. Just like Sally. Without any education, she started at the bottom, doing the hard night shift.

Over the years, her mind had reached its limits, two decades of seeing horrid things that violate the eyes. Memories that are re-played every night. Being abused verbally and physically, by people without limits. Sally saw insanity from the outside, just to catch it herself.

Finally she could not take it any more and concepts of purification emerged inside her. She did what she felt was necessary. As the morning staff arrived one day in September - they found over fifty dead patients, lifeless, in their bed along four staff members, also dead.

Only Sally had survived the night, but her mind was gone, rocking back and forth non-stop. Exactly what happened is only known by her, but it seems that some of them had been choked as they had marks around their necks. They got her into an ambulance, but that ambulance never reached the hospital. It was found crashed in a nearby wood, all the staff dead and Sally nowhere to be found.

	A Nurse's Calling	Unlocks potential in your Aura-reading ability. The Auras of Survivors who are healing or being healed are revealed to you within 20/24/28 metres. "Still attached to the fragments of her past life, she is drawn to those in need of help."
	Stridor	You are acutely sensitive to the breathing of your prey. Increases the volume of Grunts of Pain of injured Survivors by 30/40/50 %. Increases the volume of regular breathing of Survivors by 15/20/25 %. "If you do not stop and catch your breath... she will."
	Thanatophobia	Their courage fades in the face of their undeniable mortality. Each injured, dying, or hooked Survivor afflicts Survivors with a stack-able 1/1.5/2 % Action Speed penalty to Repairing, Sabotaging, and Cleansing, up to a maximum of 4/6/8 %. Increases the Action Speed penalty by a further 12 %, if there are 4 Survivors, who are either injured, dying, or hooked at the same time. "She plays with us and revels in our pain."

Prestige

Prestiging The Nurse will automatically add Tier I of her Unique Perks to the inventories of all other Killers and unlock the ability for their higher-tiered versions to spawn in their Bloodweb.

Prestige The Nurse twice more to automatically add Tier II and Tier III respectively into the other Killers' inventories.

SPECIAL ABILITY: SPENCER'S LAST BREATH
The Nurse starts the Trial with 2 Tokens.
Press and hold the Power button to charge a Blink.
Release the Power button to initiate a Blink.

Using Spencer's Last Breath consumes -1 Token per Blink / Chain Blink.

SPECIAL LOCOMOTION: BLINK
A Blink allows The Nurse to pierce the Realm of the Entity and teleport through obstacles and walls in a straight line:

• Grants the ability to teleport for up to 20 metres.
  • The Nurse can adjust the Teleportation distance by aiming at any point closer to her.
  • The Nurse can teleport to other floors by aiming at the ceiling or floor of a room that has another one above or below it.

SPECIAL LOCOMOTION: CHAIN BLINK
After the first Blink, if there is at least 1 Token available, the Chain Blink Window automatically opens for 1.5 seconds, during which The Nurse can initate a Chain Blink:

• Grants the ability to teleport for up to 12 metres.
  • The Nurse can adjust the Teleportation distance by aiming at any point closer to her.
  • The Nurse can teleport to other floors by aiming at the ceiling or floor of a room that has another one above or below it.

SPECIAL STATE: FATIGUE
After either the Chain Blink Window closes or the final Chain Blink elapses, The Nurse enters a state of Fatigue for 2 to 3 seconds, depending on how many Blinks she chained.

  • This cool-down is added only to the other Fatigue cool-downs, if The Nurse has executed an Attack before going into Fatigue.
• The Nurse cannot be stunned during her Fatigue, Fatigue takes precedence and overrides other stuns.

Lightburn (obsolete):

This mechanic was removed in Patch 6.7.0.

• Shining a Flashlight on The Nurse's body at any time would block her from charging a Blink.
• Shining a Flashlight on The Nurse's body while she was already charging a Blink would instead stun her and force her into Fatigue.
• Lightburn induced by Flash Grenades or Firecrackers was applied instantly upon explosion.

	Wooden Horse	An unpainted toy carved out of cheap wood to resemble a horse. Once the symbol of a deep connection between a catatonic patient and his nurse. Reduces the additional Fatigue applied by missed Special Attacks by -0.5 seconds.
	Bad Man Keepsake	A rotten molar ripped from the "Cataontic Boy's" cold dead hand. Normally stable and calm, it becomes incredibly agitated at The Nurse's touch. Survivors hit with a Special Attack have their Auras revealed to you, if they are healing or being healed within 28 metres of your location for 60 seconds.
	Catatonic Boy's Treasure	A pine-cone which unexpectedly calmed a patient's repetitive movement. Taken from the "Catatonic Boy's" body. Reduces the additional Fatigue applied by Chain Blinks by -65 %.
	Dark Cincture	A black rope used as a belt in times of mourning. Taken from Father Campbell's body. Increases your Movement speed during the Chain Blink Window by +30 %.
	Dull Bracelet	A worthless piece of jewellery that might have an important significance to someone. Taken from the "Anxious Girl's" body. Grants +100 % bonus Bloodpoints for Precise Blink Score Events. Reduces the maximum range of the Blink by -20 %.
	Pocket Watch	A charred and broken pocket watch with rattling pieces. Taken from Nurse Moris' body. Increases the duration of the Chain Blink Window by +0.2 seconds.
	Anxious Gasp	The gasp of surprise collected from the asylum patient Mary Jenner, also known as the "Anxious Girl" that The Nurse was fond of. Twitches vigorously at The Nurse's touch. Coming within 1 metre of Survivors while teleporting causes them to scream and reveal their location. Grants 200 Bloodpoints in the Deviousness Category.
	Ataxic Respiration	The irregular and deteriorating breath collected from the asylum patient known as the "Catatonic Boy". Normally stable and calm, it becomes incredibly agitated at The Nurse's touch. Reduces the duration of Fatigue by -7 %.
	Fragile Wheeze	The whistling and rattling breath stolen from Father Campbell. Silently curves and bends at The Nurse's touch. Survivors hit with a Special Attack suffer from the Mangled Status Effect for 70 seconds.
	Heavy Panting	The slow and bulging breath stolen from Harvey Kavanagh, the asylum's "Fat Orderly". Dimly oscillates at The Nurse's touch. Extends the Lunge duration of Special Attacks to 130 %, which increases your Attack range by +30 %. This effect only applies after the second or third Blink.
	Spasmodic Breath	The twitchy and tremulous breath stolen from the "Bad Man". Aggressively pulses and jumps at The Nurse's touch. Hitting a Survivor with a Special Attack causes the following effects for 60 seconds: Increases your Movement speed to 4.6 m/s. Disables your Power.
	"Bad Man's" Last Breath	A powerful last breath snatched from the asylum patient known as the "Bad Man". In the hands of The Nurse, it jolts with intensity. Hitting Survivors with a Special Attack grants the Undetectable Status Effect for 25 seconds. "Bad Man's" Last Breath" has a cool-down of 45 seconds.
	Campbell's Last Breath	A powerful last breath snatched from the asylum priest Father Campbell. In the hand of The Nurse, it crackles with intensity. Reappearing from a fully charged Blink, you automatically Blink at full charge in the direction you are facing. This requires that you have at least 1 Charge left after the initial Blink.
	Jenner's Last Breath	A powerful last breath snatched from the asylum patient Mary Jenner, also known as the "Anxious Girl". In the hands of The Nurse, it trembles with intensity. After exhausting all of your Blinks, but before succumbing to Fatigue, press the Active Ability button to immediately Blink back to your starting location. Recharges your Power by +1 Charge.
	Kavanagh's Last Breath	A powerful last breath snatched from the asylum orderly Harvey Kavanagh, also known as the "Fat Orderly". In the hands of The Nurse, it wobbles with intensity. When succumbing to Fatigue, all Survivors within 8 metres of your location suffer from the Blindness Status Effect for 60 seconds.
	Matchbox	A matchbox containing an odd collection of mismatched buttons. Serves as a reminder of a horrible place. Increases your Movement speed to 4.4 m/s for the entire Trial. Restricts your Power to just 1 Blink. This cannot be altered by other Add-ons.
	Torn Bookmark	A white and pristine piece of ribbon once attached to a sacred book. Serves as the symbol of a dispute. Increases the number of available Power Tokens by +1. Increases the Power Recharge time to 130 %.

Up to Patch 6.7.0, 'The Nurse was affected by a unique mechanic when Survivors would use light-emitting Items against her when or before charging a Blink:

SPECIAL VULNERABILITY: LIGHTBURN
Interacting with the Spirit World causes The Nurse to suffer from Lightburn, which leaves her vulnerable to bright lights while using her Power:

• Shining Flashlights directly at The Nurse prevents her from charging a Blink for as long as the light is shining at her.
• Shining Flashlights directly at The Nurse, or detonating Firecrackers or Flash Grenades near her, while she is in the process of charging a Blink will stun her, forcing her into Fatigue.

Patch 1.1.2

• Nerf: added Lightburn vulnerability.
• Nerf: reduced the default charges of Spencer's Last Breath from 3 Blinks to 2 Blinks.
  • This, in conjunction to a Nerf to Fragile Wheeze, reduced the maximum number of available Blinks and Chain Blinks from 7 Blinks to 5 Blinks.
    • 7 Blinks were possible with the 1.1.0-1.1.1 versions of Fragile Wheeze and Campbell's Last Breath.

• QoL: standardised The Nurse's post-Blink Lunge to the default variation shared by all Killers now.
  • This now allows for full rotation mid-Lunge compared to the former Lunge which was restricted to a straight path and could not avoid potential obstacles by curving around them.
• QoL: a Blink's duration is now determined by how long a Blink was charged for. Charging duration still determines the maximum available Blink distance, but The Nurse is no longer committed to that distance and can shorten her travel path by aiming her camera to a desired spot closer to her.
• QoL: The Nurse can now blink upwards and downwards, including through floors and ceilings.

Patch 3.3.1

• Nerf: reworked Spencer's Last Breath to be based on Charges, requiring The Nurse to wait for her Blink Charges to reload instead of having the maximum amount available immediately post-Fatigue.
• Nerf: reworked several Blink Charge Add-ons, reducing the maximum number of available Blinks (with Add-ons) from 5 to 3.

Patch 5.5.0

• QoL: rewrote the majority of the code governing The Nurse, especially net-working, to fix a plethora of issues that plagued her over the years.

• QoL: added a new sound cue that plays when The Nurse has fully regenerated all her Blink charges.
• Nerf: any attack following a Blink and before The Nurse succumbs to Fatigue is now considered a Special Attack and no longer activates any effects associated with Basic Attacks.

• The Nurse was the first female Killer.
• The Nurse was the first Killer to be introduced as a DLC.
• In The Entity's Realm, she shares her home turf with The Clown in the Crotus Prenn Asylum.
• The Nurse's teleportation Power holds references to several other Games with the ability under the same name of "Blinking".
• The Nurse was the first Killer who used telekinesis to perform various interactions.
• The Nurse has the lowest default Movement speed and is slower than a running Survivors to compensate for her ability to teleport through obstacles, walls, and even floors.
  • However, this also makes her entirely dependent on using her Power for any sort of mobility.
• Before the standardisation of the Lunge Attack, The Nurse had the shortest Lunge amongst all Killers, due its reach being tied to the base Movement speed.
• The Nurse was one of just two Killers affected by the Lightburn mechanic before its deprecation, due to her power interacting with the Spirit World.

Developer Tidbits

• The Nurse screams from pain and sighs with relief every time she Blinks.
  • This is because the process is painful to her, according to the Developers during one of their Weekly Dev Streams.
• The Nurse was "bat-shit crazy" when she strangled one of her patients at Crotus Prenn Asylum, which made her more susceptible to The Entity's corruption.

Design

• The Nurse was hinted at by the Developers to have been be inspired by the nurses featured in the Silent Hill franchise.
• The Nurse was the first notably shorter Killer introduced into the Game in comparison to the original Killer trio.
• The Nurse was the first Killer to float and glide across the floor instead of walk and remained the only Killer to do so for nearly eight years until the addition of The Lich, who also floats and glides across the floor, immediately followed by The Dark Lord in his Vampire Form.
• The Nurse does not have an audible footstep, though her dress creates a faint rustling noise when moving.
• The Nurse leaves a trail of glowing dots and black smoke after her.
• In the earlier days of Dead by Daylight, The Nurse was one of the very few Killers whose breathing was not distorted in some way.
  • She makes a rather human-like wheeze, which sounds stressed, as if her throat was closed up.
  • This is possibly due to her suffering from "Stridor", an affliction that causes a high-pitched wheezing sound caused by a disrupted airflow, likely due to her burns.
    • This medical condition is also the namesake for the Perk Stridor.
