Skeleton Key is a Rare Item
.
History
Start the Trial with
6 Charges.
Press and hold the
Use Item button to channel the
Skeleton Key:
- The Auras of other Survivors within 64 metres of your location are revealed to you for 10 seconds.
While standing next to a locked Chest, press the Use Item button to quickly open it:
- Guarantees an Item of Rare Rarity or higher.
- The Aura of the Chest is revealed to other Survivors within 42 metres and highlighted in yellow:
- Grants the ability for 1 other Survivor to Rummage through that Chest once.
- Guarantees an Item of Rare Rarity or higher.
- While performing the Rummage action, the Aura of that Survivor is revealed to the Key holder.
While standing next to the closed Hatch, press the Use Item button to re-open it:
- Takes 2.5 seconds to open.
The
Skeleton Key consumes
-1 Charge per use of any one of its abilities.
The power of the
Skeleton Key cannot be triggered by itself.
Various objects must be attached to its jump ring in the form of
Add-ons in order to channel its power.
Press and hold the Use Item button to trigger the Mind Channel ability:
- Unlocks its Aura-reading ability for up to 30 seconds.
- The revealed Auras depend on the attached Add-ons.
Press the
Use Item button while standing near a closed
Hatch to interact with it:
- Unlocks and opens the Hatch after 2.5 seconds.
Unlocking the
Hatch consumes the
Skeleton Key and can only be done if it has not yet been depleted.
The power of the
Skeleton Key cannot be triggered by itself.

Change Log
- Nerf: a depleted Key can no longer open the Hatch.
- This is a minor nerf as it only really affects Keys brought into a Trial, rather than those found in Chests, as the latter lack any Aura-reading Add-ons, unless one uses Ace in the Hole
.
- Rework:
- Buff: new Ability: temporarily reveals the Auras of other nearby Survivors when used.
- Buff: new Ability: can be used to quickly unlock Chests, which guarantees a Rare Item or better.
- Buff: highlights that Chest's Aura to other Survivors, allowing any one of them to Rummage through it once, which also guarantees a Rare Item or better.
- Quality of Life: Charges now equate to instances of using its abilities, rather than for how long it can be channelled.
- Quality of Life: opening the Hatch no longer consumes the Item.
- Change: lowered the Rarity from Visceral to Rare.
Trivia
- The Skeleton Key was the only available Key in Dead by Daylight until Patch 1.1.2 added several new Unlockables.
