Inconsistencies of the Rifts and Tomes
The mechanics constituting The Archives of Dead by Daylight are probably the most inconsistent when it comes to changes between iterations. |
Rift Fragments (RF) are one of 7 in-game currencies in Dead by Daylight
Overview
Rift Fragments are a special currency not listed amongst the other available ones and only available for use when a Rift is currently open.
Rift Fragments are used automatically to progress through the Tiers of a Rift.
Obtaining
Rift Fragments can be obtained by playing ranked Trials and earning Experience Points and completing Tome Challenges from Tomes that accompany an actively open Rift.
Older Tomes do not award Rift Fragments anymore for completing their Challenges.
XP
The Rift Widget shows a Progress Bar that fills up with XP after completing a ranked Trial.
Players gain 1 RF every 500 XP.
The amount of XP gained from a Trial is mostly determined by the Emblem System.
Challenges
Claiming a completed Tome Challenge from the current Tome (i.e. it is accompanied by a Rift that is open) also awards Rift Fragments, with the amount depending on the type of Challenge:
- REGULAR CHALLENGES award 5 RF
- MASTER CHALLENGES award 8 RF
- GLYPH CHALLENGES award 8 RF
- CORE MEMORY CHALLENGES award 8 RF
Tome Challenges completed from a Tome listed in the Compendium (i.e. their Rift is closed) do not award any Rift Fragments anymore.
Tome Levels
Reaching the Epilogue Node of a Tome Level from the current Tome also awards Rift Fragments, with the amount increasing for each Level:
- Tome Level 1 awards 10 RF
- Tome Level 2 awards 15 RF
- Tome Level 3 awards 20 RF
- Tome Level 4 awards 25 RF
While some Event Tomes also followed this behaviour, the earliest ones and all recent ones (i.e. those featuring Trinkets) only award 10 RF, regardless of the Tome Level.

Tiers
The Rift has 70 regular Rift Tiers and 13 Deep Rift Tiers.
Players need 10 Rift Fragments to progress through each Tier.
Since all Players start with Tier 1 already unlocked, this equates to 690 Rift Fragments in order to complete the regular Rift and an additional 130 Rift Fragments to complete the Deep Rift.
Change Log
Patch 4.7.0
- Quality of Life: reduced the XP-requirement to receive 1 Rift Fragment from 800 XP to 500 XP.
- Quality of Life: modified the amount of Rift Fragments awarded for reaching the Epilogue Node of a Tome Level from a fixed 10 across all four Tome Levels:
- Level 1: 10 RF
- Level 2: 15 RF
- Level 3: 20 RF
- Level 4: 25 RF
Patch 7.5.0
- Quality of Life: modified the amount of Rift Fragments awarded for completing Tome Challenges:
- REGULAR: increased it from 3 RF to 5 RF.
- MASTER/GLYPH/CORE MEMORY: increased it from 5 RF to 8 RF.
Patch 7.6.0
- Reversal: reverted a change in Patch 7.3.0 that extended the change in Patch 4.7.0 to Event Tomes.
- Finishing a Tome Level of an Event Tome now only ever awards 10 RF.
Patch 8.0.0
- Change: the Epilogue Nodes of all Tome Levels of an Event Tome now award a fixed amount of both Trinkets and Rift Fragments as the Currency Rewards.
Patch 8.7.0
- Rework: completely reworked The Archives and all associated mechanics:
- Increased the amount of Rift Fragments received for 500 XP from 1 RF to 5 RF (factor of 5).
- However, since this Patch also increased the RF-requirement for a Rift Tier from 10 RF to 100 RF (factor of 10), this effectively halves the amount of Rift Fragments gained from playtime.
- Increased the amount of Rift Fragments received for 500 XP from 1 RF to 5 RF (factor of 5).
Trivia
- When a Rift closes, its corresponding Tome will be placed in the Compendium section.
- Completing Challenges from Tomes featured in the Compendium will not award any Rift Fragments, only Bloodpoints
