Perks are a type of Unlockable and a core Game Mechanic in Dead by DaylightIconHelp DBDlogo.pngIconHelp DBDlogo.pngIconHelp DBDlogo.png.

There are currently 282 Perks featured in Dead by Daylight.

This article focuses on the mechanic as a whole and provides an overview.
It is highly recommended to consult the dedicated Wiki page for each Perk for any additional information, such as their history, change logs, interactions with other Game Mechanics, etc.

Overview

Perks are the most essential Game Mechanic in Dead by Daylight, providing Survivors and Killers with special abilities, enhancing or diminishing existing ones, and information during a Trial.

Perk Slots

A Character can be equipped with up to 4 Perks at once, given that all Perk Slots are unlocked, which depends on their Level.

All Characters start off with just one Perk Slot unlocked.

Additional Perk Slots are successively unlocked at Levels 5, 10, and 15 of the Bloodweb.

Obtaining Perks

Like all Unlockables, Perks spawn randomly in the Bloodweb and can be purchased from that with BloodpointsIconCurrency bloodpoints.pngIconCurrency bloodpoints.pngIconCurrency bloodpoints.png.

The only exception to this are the Tier I version of the Unique Perks each Character comes with, those are unlocked from the start and available in their Load-OutIconHelp loadout.pngIconHelp loadout.pngIconHelp loadout.png.

Perk Tiers

Each Perk has at least one effect that has a variable value, which depends on its current Perk Tier, generally the effect becomes stronger the higher the Tier, or in the case of a cool-down or penalty, shorter/weaker the higher the Tier.

The current Tier of a Perk is indicated by markings (referred to as "Pips") at the top-right side on their icon and also by a Perk's Rarity:

  • Tier I: 1 Pip, Uncommon Rarity
  • Tier II: 2 Pips, Rare Rarity
  • Tier III: 3 Pips, Very Rare Rarity

Purchasing a higher-tiered version of a Perk from the Bloodweb will automatically replace the lower-tiered version in a Character's inventory.

Perk Types

There are 2 types of Perks featured in Dead by Daylight: Unique Perks and General Perks.

Unique Perks

Please refer to the Sub-Article in order to view only the Unique Perks currently available in Dead by Daylight.

Unique Perks are Perks that belong to one of the playable Characters in Dead by Daylight.
Each Character has a total of 3 such Perks and has them unlocked in their inventory at Tier I by default (the Tier II and Tier III versions can randomly appear in that Character's Bloodweb).

Since they are unique to a Character, they tend to provide special abilities and effects tuned to fit their owner's Lore and intrinsic Gameplay style.
As for why they are initially locked to their original Character, Dead by Daylight's Lore explained that these Perks would need to be taught to the other Characters first, before the latter could get them in their Bloodwebs, which is why these Perks were originally known as Teachable Perks, before the mechanic was reworked with the Prestige Rework in Patch 6.1.0.

In order to allow other Characters to access these Perks, they must be unlocked in one of 2 ways: through the Prestige mechanic or the Shrine of SecretsIconHelp shrineOfSecrets.pngIconHelp shrineOfSecrets.pngIconHelp shrineOfSecrets.png.

The principle between the two methods is identical in how the unlocked Perks behave afterwards.

Unlocking I: Prestige

Prestiging a Character for the first time will grant all other Characters access to the former's Unique Perks, instantly making them available at Tier I in the inventory and unlocking the ability for the higher Tiers to randomly spawn in the Bloodweb like any other Perk.

The following table details exactly what each Level of Prestige unlocks:

Prestige Inventory Bloodweb
Level 1 Unlocked: Tier I Can spawn: Tier II, Tier III
Level 2 Unlocked: Tier II Can spawn: Tier III
Level 3 Unlocked: Tier III NaN.png

Unlocking II: Shrine of Secrets

Alternatively, if a Player wants to obtain a specific Unique Perk without having to prestige that Character, or does not own it in the first place, they can visit the Shrine of SecretsIconHelp shrineOfSecrets.pngIconHelp shrineOfSecrets.pngIconHelp shrineOfSecrets.png and use the XP-based in-game currency of Iridescent ShardsIconCurrency iridescentShards.pngIconCurrency iridescentShards.pngIconCurrency iridescentShards.png to unlock a Perk Tier from its selection, which updates on a weekly basis.

Annotations

  • Once Unique Perks are unlocked, they behave identical to General Perks and are henceforth completely independent of their original Character:
    • If Claudette's Unique Perks are unlocked at Tier I, it does not matter whether she herself has Tier II of say Self-Care yet or not (a common misconception amongst newer Players).
    • All other Survivors will all have Tier I Self-Care unlocked in their inventory and can obtain Tier II and subsequently Tier III of it from their Bloodweb, even if Claudette still only has Tier I herself at that point.
  • Unlocking the next Tier of a Unique Perk automatically replaces any instances of it in a Character's current Bloodweb.
    • If a Character's current Bloodweb contains the next Tier of an unlocked Unique Perk, but the original Character's Prestige is raised to the next level before it is purchased, that Tier is automatically unlocked to the inventory and the Perk in the Bloodweb is automatically replaced with another random Perk.
    • However, if that Character does not have any other Perk Tiers to unlock, a completely new Bloodweb will be generated instead.

General Perks

Please refer to the Sub-Article in order to view only the General Perks currently available in Dead by Daylight.

General Perks (sometimes also known as Generic Perks) are Perks that are all other Perks in Dead by Daylight.

They are not tied to any Character and are always available in the Bloodweb of all Characters.
However, this also means that every single Character must obtain them manually, they are not immediately available in the inventory unlike any unlocked Unique Perks.

There are currently 30 General Perks.

These are special types of Perks that all interact with a specific Game Mechanic that was first introduced alongside the first instances of these Perks:

History

Throughout the Game's lifetime, Perks underwent various changes as a mechanic, mainly tied into their Rarity and how they could be obtained, which are detailed in the following Sub-Article:

Old / Alternate Perk Icons

While most Perks in Dead by Daylight never change their icon, some changes can prompt the Developers to either update or replace an icon altogether, with the latter usually occurring when a Perk receives such a significant change that the original icon no longer matches the Perk's new effect.

While no longer applicable nowadays, some platforms did not have access to certain licensed Chapter DLCs in the past.
On those platforms, the Perks associated with those DLCs would be available as General Perks and (if the icon showed one of the licensed Characters) use a modified icon.

The above still applies nowadays for the Perks of retired DLCs for Players not owning their associated Characters.

Change Log

Patch 1.1.0

  • added a new General Perk for Survivors: KindredIconPerks kindred.pngIconPerks kindred.pngIconPerks kindred.png

Patch 1.3.1

Patch 4.3.0

  • Unified the Rarities of Perks, matching each Tier with a specific Rarity:
    • Uncommon @ Tier I
    • Rare @ Tier II
    • Very Rare @ Tier III

Patch 5.3.0

Note: The changes in this Patch applied to all Players, regardless of whether they owned the Characters or not.
However, for those who did, the Perks would retain the Character-association to their former owner as well as their original icon, if it was changed, despite now acting as a General Perk:

Patch 6.0.0

Patch 6.1.0

  • Reworked Teachable Perks into Unique Perks.

Trivia

Early Concepts

  • In the Dark was an early concept version of what would become Knock Out.
  • Last Standing was an early version of what would become Left Behind.

Kill-switched Perks

  • While a kill-switched Perk may no longer be selected from the inventory, Characters that already had it in their load-out from previous Trials can still use it in-game, albeit with some strange behaviours:
    • The Perk will be locked at Tier 1, regardless of the Tier it normally has in that Character's inventory.
    • The Perk will be invisible in the Tally Screen and appear as an empty slot.
