Deep Wound is a Status Effect and Game Mechanic featured in Dead by DaylightIconHelp DBDlogo.pngIconHelp DBDlogo.pngIconHelp DBDlogo.png that is applied exclusively to SurvivorsIconHelpLoading survivor.pngIconHelpLoading survivor.pngIconHelpLoading survivor.png.

Mechanic

The Deep Wound Status Effect is a debuffing effect applied by various Unlockables and some Powers.

Survivors affected by Deep Wound suffer from a severe internal injury and are on borrowed time, automatically entering the Dying StateIconHelp dying.pngIconHelp dying.pngIconHelp dying.png after it elapses, unless they either Self-Mend or have other Survivors Mend them.

If Survivors take any damage while suffering from Deep Wound, they immediately enter the Dying State.

Deep Wound is considered its own Health State (situated in-between the Dying State and the Injured State) for technical reasons, so healing (i.e. Mending) Survivors from it will put them into the Injured StateIconHelp injured.pngIconHelp injured.pngIconHelp injured.png.
This also applies to any Healing effects acting on Deep Wound.

Bleed-out Timer

The Bleed-out timer lasts for 20 seconds and depletes at a constant rate.
It is only paused whenever the Survivor is running or in the process of Mending.

The affected Survivor sees the bleed-out timer as a special yellow bar on their HUD (same location as the Anti-Face-Camp bar while hooked), while other Survivors and the Killer see it as a yellow bar to the right of that Survivor's HUD icon in the Survivor Activity HUD.
While the Killer cannot discern the current progress of the Bleed-out timer (always seeing at as a full yellow bar), the other Survivors can see its current status, including when its paused.

Patch 8.5.0

  • Survivor Quality of Life: the Mending bar is now located beneath the Health bar, appearing front and centre in the UI instead of being tucked away next to the Survivor HUD portrait.
    • This change was motivated by the old location of the Mending bar having been a frequent source of confusion for newer Players.
  • Quality of Life: reduced the blood splatter and darkening VFX when affected by Deep Wound, instead adding them as subtle visual updated to the new bar, highlighting the dire nature of the Status Effect.

Patch 8.6.0

  • Survivor Buff: further reduced the Mending times:
    • Self-Mending: from 12 seconds to 10 seconds
    • Altruistic Mending: from 8 seconds to 6 seconds
  • Survivor Quality of Life: Mending now pauses while performing Snap Out of It.
    • This change prevents Survivors suffering from Deep Wound and Madness III at the same time from essentially being forced to enter the Dying State once their Bleed-out timer depleted past the point of matching the duration of the Snap Out of It interaction, which takes precedence over Mending.

Trivia

  • Before Patch 4.5.0 had set a fixed default value of 20 seconds for it, the duration of Bleed-Out Timer would entirely depend on the Perk that triggered its Activation, often changing with the Perk Tiers.
    • This behaviour originated from the Perk Borrowed TimeIconPerks borrowedTime.pngIconPerks borrowedTime.pngIconPerks borrowedTime.png, which introduced the Bleed-Out Timer as a new mechanic to the game a few years before it became intrinsically linked with the Deep Wound Status Effect.
