Chests
| The first time I found a chest, I didn’t manage to open it before a killer caught me. I got exuberated as something new shined some light on this hellish life I now live. I did not pay enough attention. But the next time I was more careful and I managed to loot it. But I must grasp whatever I find with my hands, cause all is lost if the killers lays his hands on me. | |||

Chests are an interactive object that can be searched by Survivors![]()
![]()
in order to acquire Items![]()
![]()
within a Trial.
Overview
Chests have predetermined spawn locations throughout the Maps and the Map Generator will randomly pick 2 of those locations to spawn a Chest in by default, with a third Chest always spawning down in the Basement![]()
![]()
.
The Basement Chest spawns either at the far end of the room or behind the locker wall opposite the bottom of the stairs.
Interactions
Chests can be interacted with in two different ways: Unlocking and Rummaging.
Unlocking a Chest is available to all Survivors by default and allows them to open a closed Chest in order to retrieve an Item![]()
![]()
from it.
Rummaging a Chest is only available to Survivors with specific Perks![]()
![]()
equipped that grant them the ability to search through an already opened and emptied Chest in order to find and retrieve a second Item from it.
For both interactions, Survivors must input 8 Charges into the Chest to complete it, with partial progress being saved.
This allows one Survivor to finish opening a Chest that another Survivor had started opening.
At the default speed of +1 c/s, either interaction takes 8 seconds to complete, with the associated noises having an audible range of 20 metres.
Killer Interrupt
A Survivor in the middle of unlocking a Chest can be grabbed by the Killer and hoisted onto their shoulder directly.
Number of Chests
By default, 3 Chests will spawn each Trial.
The amount of Chests can be influenced with the Screech Cobbler![]()
![]()
or Coin Offerings![]()
![]()
, or the Perk Hoarder![]()
![]()

Since these Unlockables stack, it is possible to spawn up any number of Chests from 1 up to 13 Chests in a given Trial.
The table below lists some combination examples:
| Chest(s) | Modifier | Unlockable(s) used |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Chest | -2 | 1 Cut Coin |
| 2 Chests | -1 | 1 Scratched Coin |
| 3 Chests | 0 | default |
| 4 Chests | +1 | 1 Tarnished Coin |
| 5 Chests | +2 | 1 Shiny Coin |
| 7 Chests | +4 (2*2) | 2 Shiny Coins |
| 9 Chests | +6 (3*2) | 3 Shiny Coins |
| 11 Chests | +8 (4*2) | 4 Shiny Coins |
| 13 Chests | +10 (4*2+2) | 4 Shiny Coins + Hoarder |
Loot
The Items![]()

:
NOTE: the Rarity of the discovered Item is determined by the Survivor who completes the Search interaction, not the one who initiated it.
Chest Loot can be of any Rarity, ranging from Common to Ultra Rare, and also includes the Event Rarity when available.

Event Chests
Winter Chests
As a first, the Winter Event Bone Chill 2024 introduced a special event-themed version of the regular Chests, the Winter Chest.
During Event Trials, some Chests spawn as that variant instead and are guaranteed to hold one of the following Items:

Trivia
- When the Developers first updated Chests to be able to spawn Event Items for the Winter Solstice 2018 Winter Event, the change had the unintended side-effect of also unlocking the ability to spawn Ultra Rare Items, which was previously impossible.
- The immense positive feedback to this unintended behaviour prompted the Developers to embrace it as a permanent feature afterwards.
- Before Patch 2.5.0, empty-handed Survivors would automatically pick up an Item from a Chest.
- Before Bone Chill 2024, there had never been any special event-themed versions of Chests.
