Bloodlust is a Status EffectIconHelp statusEffects.pngIconHelp statusEffects.pngIconHelp statusEffects.png and an integral Game Mechanic unique to KillersIconHelpLoading killer.pngIconHelpLoading killer.pngIconHelpLoading killer.png that was originally implemented in Patch 1.5.0.

Overview

Bloodlust is a tiered Status Effect that activates during long Chases and tiers-up after reaching specific time thresholds.

Each Tier provides the Killer with a stack-able boost to their Movement speed of +0.2 m/s.

Use

Bloodlust was added to the Game to help Killer Players catch up to Survivors that manage to outrun them for prolonged periods of time, especially if the former is playing a low-mobility Killer or one without a ranged attack.

Mechanic

Charging

Bloodlust is charged whenever the Killer is in an active Chase.

In order for the Killer to be in an active Chase, all three of the following conditions must be met:

  1. A Survivor enters the Killer's Field of View within 12 metres of them.
  2. That Survivor is running.
  3. The Killer is walking.

If any single one of these three conditions is not met, the Game will not initiate a Chase and not charge Bloodlust.

Regressing

Bloodlust regresses at a rate of 6 whenever the Survivor manages to lose the Killer and the Chase ends.

There are several ways how a Chase can be ended:

  • The distance between the Killer and the chased Survivor increases past 18 metres.
  • The Survivor hides for 5 seconds inside a LockerIconHelp lockers.pngIconHelp lockers.pngIconHelp lockers.png.
  • The Killer loses Line-of-Sight for more than 8 seconds.
  • The Survivor went past a viewing angle of ± 35 ° from the Killer's centre of their Field of Vision.

Losing

Bloodlust is lost immediately if the Killer performs any of the following actions:

  • Breaks a Pallet.
  • Successfully hits any Survivor.
  • Uses their Power.

Change Log

Patch 1.5.0

  • Nerf: doubled the PTB-Decay rate from -10 % per second to -20 % per second for release.

  • Nerf: Bloodlust now resets its Accumulation timer when the Killer charges their Power or actively uses it.
  • Nerf: the Lunge mechanic now ignores the speed boost from Bloodlust.
    • On the PTB, Killers with Bloodlust would benefit from an increased range to their Lunge Attack.

Patch 1.8.0

  • Nerf: increased the time to initially gain Bloodlust and in-between Tiers from 12 seconds each to 15 seconds each.

Trivia

  • The main reason the Developers decided to add Bloodlust were the so-called "Infinites", a problem present on essentially every Map of Dead by Daylight at the time.
    • Infinites referred to specific WindowsIconHelp window.pngIconHelp window.pngIconHelp window.png that, due to the surrounding map geometry, obstacles and the absence of the Window Blocker mechanic, allowed Survivors to essentially infinitely loop the Killer, without the Killer ever being able to catch them there, due to not being fast enough, which Bloodlust intended to counteract.
